DC United are now closing in on the MLS play-offs
Wayne Rooney produced a man-of-the-match performance as DC United moved a step closer to the sixth and final play-off spot in the MLS with a 5-0 victory against Montreal Impact.
Ben Olsen's side went ahead in the 17th minute through Luciano Acosta's well-placed effort into the bottom corner.
Four minutes later, former Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna almost gave Montreal an instant response but DC United took full control in the second half.
It was not long before Rooney made his mark, cutting inside onto his right foot and picking out the bottom corner with an excellent finish.
The former England striker then went from scorer to provider, starting the move as Paul Arriola tapped in from close range to make it 3-0 to the hosts.
DC United got their fourth shortly after with Arriola doubling his tally with a brilliant chip before Rooney wrapped up proceedings with his second and his side's fifth thanks to another lobbed finish.
Victory means Rooney's side are now two points behind sixth-placed Montreal with two games in hand.
